As the 15th century ended - after Jews had thrived in Spain for hundreds of years - things fell apart. The Church and the Crown joined together in a period of "purification" known as the Inquisition. Partly a political solution and partly a messianic one, the Inquisition demanded that Spanish Jews become Christians.
Some fled, some resisted, but others chose a third way. These were the Marranos - Jews who agreed to convert while, at the same time, continuing to practice their true faith in secret. This film follows one Marrano family who live with the specter of betrayal, torture, and death.
